Castle Hill and Darrow Wood, Denton

Denton's little-known National Trust Property.
Darrow Wood was acquired by the National Trust in 1990. This monument is one of the few well preserved small motte and bailey castles in Norfolk its acquisition by the National Trust ensures its continued survival. The whole site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and it protected by statute. It can be found off of Darrow Green Road, Darrow Green, opp. Darrow Green Farm.

Eye Castle started as a Motte and Bailey castle over 900 years ago and has seen many changes over the centuries. It is located close to the centre of Eye and would have dominated the town in its hey-day. Today a ruined Victorian folly is found at the top of the mound with a viewing platform to allow extensive views across the town and beyond.
The inner bailey is maintained as mown grassland with seats and picnic tables to enable visitors to spend a few quiet moments on site.
The castle is also a popular venue for amateur dramatics with local groups performing Shakespearian plays or children’s theatre during the summer months. The Mid Suffolk Countryside Team look after the site and hold several events there during the year Contact them on 01449 724639

Grain Brewery
Grain Brewery is located in the Waveney Valley of South Norfolk. An area characterised by its vibrant yet tranquil river and its mile upon mile of stunning views across some of the richest farm land in England.
It is in one of these farms that we found the perfect location for our brewery. South farm in Alburgh (pronounced Arrrrrbraa) has been owned and operated by the Bond family for three generations, ands it is their old dairy that we have converted into our brewhouse and cellars.

Harleston Museum

Run by the Harleston & District Historial Society this compact museum staffed by volunteers is located next to King George's Hall, Broad Street, Harleston. Opening times for 2012 are Wednesday 10.00 - 12.00 and 2.00 - 4.00 and Saturday 10.00 - 12.00 from Saturday 12th May until Saturday 29th September. There is no fixed entry fee but donations are appreciated.
The Museum displays artefacts relating to the life and times of the people of Harleston and the immediate surrounding parishes from pre-historic times to the present day. More specifically these items illustrate; personal and domestic life, working life, costume, recreation, enterainment and the built environment of the town.

Homersfield Bridge

This grade II bridge was build in 1969 and is a very early example of the use of concrete.
The bridge spans the boundries of Alburgh and Homersfield in Suffolk.
Extensive repairs were completed in 1995 with grant aid from English Heritage, Norfolk County Council, Suffolk Country Council and Waveney District Council, the Upper Waveney Project, Homersfield Parish Council and Blue Circle Cement.

See how the magnificent Langley Abbey complex was constructed using Caen stone delivered by boat from France and why the work had to stop every Autumn. Discover how the Abbey lasted for nearly 400 years - it flourished at the start, owning 62 Norfolk parishes but then fell into rack and ruin before dissolved in 1536.
Stand in the Abbots private cellar and imagine the room full of provisions, then climb his private sprial staircase to his chamber. Learn how the Abbot and his 14 Canons spent their time, in worship, teaching God's word, managing their estates, as well as doing what they shouldn't!
Travel through time on our farming journey - starting before history when Neolithic man settled in Langley 6000 years ago and began to farm. They harvested crops such as wheat and barley as well as keeping livestock. Was it the owner of the Roma Villa who buried the golden coins found in a pot on our fields? Try to imagine who wore the Anglo Saxon belt buckles also discovered. Understand why the land at Langley has always been occupied, with its fertile soil and proximity to the Yare river highway.

The Museum was formed in 1972 by local enthusiasts and is a Registered Charity. 35,000 visitors a year view 60 aircraft, plus over than 23,000 artefacts displayed in
two hangars and eight themed buildings on its 8-acre site. The collection reflects the development of aviation over the last 100 years, mainly in the East Anglia region.
There is no admission charge but donations are encouraged. There is a shop, light refreshment area, picnic tables and fundraising bricabrac stalls. Wheelchairs are available. Dogs are permitted when on leads. Special events are held on Sundays during the Summer months, and there is a programme of activities for school groups. A raised boardwalk through a Willow plantation leads to the river Waveney and offers a peaceful stroll in natural surroundings.

A trip to Redwings’ Caldecott Visitor Centre near Great Yarmouth makes a wonderful family day out.
This Quality Assured Visitor Attraction is home to more than 80 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules through the Summer months including handsome heavy horse Prince, tiny Shetland Sampson and cheeky donkey Denise.
As well as plenty of chances to meet the horses and ponies, visitors can learn more about the work of Redwings on a ‘Walk and Talk’ around the site, watch horse care demonstrations, buy goodies in the well-stocked gift shop or enjoy a delicious meal in the Nosebag café. There is a children’s play area, ‘Horse Wise’ education centre with interactive games, and plenty of special events throughout the season too. Children’s birthday parties are also on offer at the site, and are always popular!
The centre can be found at Caldecott Hall, opposite Fritton Lake, on the A143 between Beccles and Great Yarmouth and is open from March 27th to October 31st with free admission.

St. Peter’s Brewery is based in a moated medieval Hall at St. Peter South Elmham, just off the A143 between Harleston and Bungay.
The brewery was built in 1996 and is housed in an attractive range of traditional former agricultural buildings adjacent to St. Peter’s Hall. Siting the brewery at St. Peter’s was ideal because of the excellent water quality from a deep bore-hole. Locally malted barley is used, together with quality hops to produce premium bottled ales. St. Peter’s distinctive oval-shaped bottles were specially designed and are a copy of one from Gibbstown, near Philadelphia which dates from c. 1770.
St. Peter’s brew 'traditional' beers - bitters, mild etc. - as well as some more unusual beers such as honey porter and fruit beer. The award winning range of bottled beers are brewery conditioned and then cold filtered to give a smooth rounded finish when consumed.

Established as a registered charity in 2001, the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary is based at Stonham Aspal in Suffolk, where it operates a comprehensive facility for the care & rehabilitation of owls from the region, and the promotion of owl conservation throughout the UK and beyond. The Sanctuary at Stonham Barns is the focal point of our organisation and provides a delightful place to visit to watch, study or simply enjoy the company of Owls and other birds of prey. There are over 70 raptors at the Centre, all housed in spacious aviaries and flying free in narrated flying displays or demonstrations. You will also find Red Squirrels, Chipmunks, the Raptor Hospital, The Barclays Sensory Garden, an information centre about Owls, a woodland walk with bird hide, picnic areas and plenty of activities for children including a mini-maze & adventure frame.

The Pennings is a Local Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Eye, lying on the banks of the River Dove. Once an arable field, the site has developed into a damp meadow with an abundance of wild flowers and grasses. A small picnic area with tables is located by the car park and mown grass paths allow visitors to explore this small site.
Wildlife seen along the river includes Kingfisher, Water Vole and several species of dragonfly. In Summer the grassland is alive with grasshoppers and other insects.

The12 miles of waymarked footpaths within the Thornham Estate wind through beautiful countryside taking visitors into ancient parkland, woodland, farmland and water meadows. The Walks also include a surfaced path suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, which leads for half a mile to the Thornham Walled Garden, passing on your way the renovated hermitage and pets’ cemetery. Wingfield Barns became the home of Wingfield Arts and Music in 2000 housed in a £1.4m conversion of farm buildings next to Wingfield College. The inspiration for the project was Ian Chance, the founder of WAM. The buildings are a legacy of his vision to have galleries, workshops and artist resident accomodation in the beautiful and quiet Suffolk countryside.
The site is centred on a Grade II listed timber framed barn built in 1537. The sympathetically restored buildings sit well away from the road in an naturally sloping site with sweeping views to the South across a traditionally farmed landscape.
Housed in the offices are the team now responsible for bringing Wingfield Barns back to life. Now owned by Mid Suffolk District Council, the new Manager, Geoff Doggett, is running the site and developing the business plan. This involves building relationships with the local communities, artists, schools and all those interested in the future of this important Suffolk venue. Geoff is working under a contract prior to a new charity or community interest company forming in late 2009 to formally take on the leasehold of the buildings and run the artistic programming and venue hirings.
