Harleston Heritage Group
We are a small group of people with a love of Harleston and its history. We have already published two books. "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MUSKETTS?" is a study of shopping, shops, shopkeepers and the commercial life in Harleston from 1850 to 2001. We have also published "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO OLD BILL?", an account of policing in Harleston, details of some local officers and a short history of Norfolk Constabulary. Both books are available from Harleston Information Centre, 8 Exchange Street.
We have recently been researching a book on the pubs (past and present) of Harleston. Entitled "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE GREEN DRAGON?". It is due to be published soon. We have worked with The Forum Trust in writing heritage stories for http://www.norfolkheritage.org.uk .
The Group produced an audio Discovery Trail of Harleston, which received a LocalHero Award. The Trail cd and audio player can be borrowed from the Information Centre or Swan Hotel.

Harleston Lions

LIONS NEWS A retired teacher from Diss High School, now living on the island of Dominica, (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) was appalled by the desperately poor standard of local schools and decided to do something about it. She started workshops to help the teachers teach local primary school children to read and write, making the best use of what limited resources there are. (For anybody interested you can see her work at www.show-me-wow.com) The problem - there is nothing available in the way of equipment and she is desperate for anything such as crayons, chalk, note books, comics etc. In fact anything that will help the children learn. The message came across loud and clear - can we help? The URC church in Diss made a very kind donation of childrens books but more was needed. Lion Mike Withinshaw went into action. With a donation from the Harleston Lions and local businesses, Mike was able to put together a pallet load of goods. New stationery, note pads, chalk, pencils, crayons, pencil sharpeners and other essential school stationery was boxed up and is now on the way to the island of Dominica from Portsmouth. On arrival the Lions Club in Dominica will help Chris Lawrence distribute the items to the local schools via the teacher workshops she runs. We are now getting organized for the annual Fireworks on 06 November. This is a fun evening organized together with the Scouts and Magpies Hockey Club. All the money collected is used to help charitable causes in and around Harleston. So please give us your support. We meet every 2nd and 4th Monday 8.00 pm at the Apollo Club in Harleston. If any of you would like to join us, Ian Lodge would welcome a call on 01379 852417 for an informal chat. Why not join us and have fun helping Harleston.

The Jive Club at The Apollo, Harleston Set up by Sandra Boatman and John Scallan in July 2007, the Jive Club has been running in and around Harleston on Monday nights at 8pm since March 2008, and has recently moved to The Apollo Club in Mendham Lane. Sandra and John teach modern jive, which is a great dance style blending jive and salsa moves. It’s one of the most useful, social and versatile of dances, as it can be danced to most music, from blues and swing through to rock n roll, the 60s, through to today’s chart hits, and, once you’ve learned the basics, you can dance with anyone! The Jive Club offers everyone a chance to dance, even if you don’t have a partner, and Jive Club members are a very friendly crowd! Anyone and everyone is welcome at any time, whether you’re a complete beginner, or an experienced jiver: there really is something for everyone. Each night there are two classes held and plenty of practice in between, and there’s always someone on hand to ask for help if you need it. The venue is great with a lovely floor, spacious seating area, plenty of parking and access to the bar. Jiving can really boost your social life as most club members go out to dance every weekend to local bands. It’s a great way of getting fit, losing weight, meeting new people and simply having fun! Visit the website for full details www.thejiveclubnorfolk.co.uk or contact Sandra on 01953 455500. Monday 7.00 - 8.oopm Ballroom & Latin for Improvers with Simply Dance.
