J D Young's Magpie hotel is a 16th Century Coaching Inn. It was sympathetically restored in 1999, having been left to deteriorate for many years, and then the refurbishments have been completed to a very high standard.

The building is steeped in history and among many other past guests is the famous painter Sir Alfred Munnings, who used to frequent the hotel on a regular basis. Unfortunately, or perhaps more fortunately for the owner at the time, when it came to paying his bill he was often without funds and offered a gift of one of his paintings to pay his tab. His paintings are now selling at around £40,000 each at auction.

Rumour has it that Sir Winston Churchill stayed at the hotel, in the present day room 5, for one night when he met with General Eisenhower. The General stayed in the Selbourne house just across the road and their meeting took place in the lounge end of the restaurant. This part of the building had been used as the local Fire Station, before being incorporated into the Hotel.

Our splendid 'Magpie' sign still hangs from the corner of the building and can be seen from the Market Place and London Road.

We offer a very high standard of accommodation with extremely attentive staff to help make your stay with us more enjoyable. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us our staff are only too happy to help
